MARIAN is the protagonist of Paris Locked, a successful artist who has failed to cope with many of her life challenges. When the story opens, she is trying to save her marriage. She not only sees the world through her past but uses the past to determine how she should live.

JASON is Marian’s raffish and slippery husband. Often funny and loving, he also makes many poisonous, selfish choices that harm his family. He glosses over the damage.

RANIA is an elegant and innovative art gallery director who invites Marian to exhibit in Paris. From Tunisia, Rania sometimes struggles to adapt to French culture and find her place in the powerful and exclusive Parisian art gallery world.

PIERRE-ANGE is Rania’s wealthy, coercive French husband. He owns Rania’s gallery and resists the growing independence of his wife.

ALBERTA is a close friend of Marian. After her husband, Todd, had an affair, she resisted divorce and the family relocated to the UK for a fresh start. Marian observes her ongoing pain and wonders whether any marriage can survive the assault of adultery. Is continuing in a marriage for the sake of young children always a good idea?

TODD is a crass business colleague of Jason. His affair haunts his wife, Alberta.

STEPHANIE is a murky figure encountered by the reader solely through emails and the memories of Marian and Jason. Her shifting role flows through the novel.

THE RAMOS-LOPEZ FAMILY consists of poor Venezuelan parents and their daughter, Quintina, whose lives cross with Marian and Jason in Paris.

ALAIN VIPOND is a malignant spokesperson for the French far-right.

OLIVIA is the daughter of Marian and Jason, a supportive young adult who cares for both parents.
